British and American Athletes Set New Elliptical Biking Distance Records
ElliptiGO, the creator of the world’s first elliptical bike, today announced several records set in June in the emerging sport of elliptical biking.
“We initially created the ElliptiGO to enable former runners, such as myself, to run again,” said Bryan Pate, co-founder and co-president of ElliptiGO. “Our ultimate goal, however, was to launch a new sport with its own competitive events and records. We are thrilled to announce that several elliptical bikers broke or set distance records in June. The endurance achievements of these athletes are a testament to the excitement and potential of this new sport.”
•On June 4th, JoAnn Wegert of Ohio set the new women’s one-day distance record by completing a 110 mile ride as part of the Depot Day Century Ride. Nine days later, Jenny Hadfield from Illinois smashed Wegert’s distance record by riding 152.1 miles in one day as part of the Greater Illinois Trail and Parks Ride (GITAP). Hadfield, an active runner and endurance athlete, also set a women’s multi-day elliptical biking distance record in 2010 by riding her ElliptiGO from Chicago to Toronto (507.5 miles) over six days. After completing her official one-day record-setting ride in June, Hadfield thanked her crew and the GITAP ride organizational team for their support, saying, “That was the ride of my life.”
•Meanwhile, on the “other side of the pond”, George Watkins set a new overall distance record for a multi-stage event by completing the Deloitte Ride Across Britain. Watkins rode a total of 960 miles over nine consecutive days, completing the event in a cumulative ride time of 99 hours and 19 minutes. Watkins, an Ironman triathlete, first discovered the ElliptiGO after suffering a broken back from a skiing accident in March 2010. As part of his recovery program, Watkins used the ElliptiGO to rebuild cardio stamina through outdoor low-impact exercise. Now fully recovered, Watkins continues to train actively on his ElliptiGO. His record-setting ride complied with all Guinness World Records criteria and is now under review by Guinness for inclusion in the organization’s book of world records.
“We’re elated with the record-setting momentum that we are already seeing from our customers” said Brent Teal, ElliptiGO co-president and co-founder. “We’d like to congratulate JoAnn, Jenny, and George for their inspiring efforts in June and we can’t wait to see what new challenges and record-setting rides ElliptiGO athletes will take on next.”
