Bikeability kids     Bikeability is cycle training which gives the next generation the skills and confidence to ride their bikes on today’s roads.  Almost half of children would prefer to travel to school by bike, but currently only 1% do so. Bikeability is designed to help them get in gear! The course is split into three levels - from basic bike handling skills, to riding on quiet roads, all the way to dealing with more complex traffic conditions.

Bikeability is teaming up with Cycle 2008 for the “Bikeability Schools’ Day” – a unique chance for pupils and teachers to practice their Bikeability skills, get their wheels turning, and find out more about sustainable travel and cycling safely.

School pupils and their teachers are invited to:

·          Participate in a Bikeability session (10am -13.30) and try
the latest bikes on the kids’ test track*

·           Follow the Bikeability Discovery Trail round the Cycle Show, learning all about bike mechanics, cycle safety, the environment and essential kit to get started on two wheels

·           Watch professional BMX riders pull off an awesome street display

·          Listen to world champion BMX rider Shanaze Reade & Olympic gold medalist Paul Manning giving their top tips for cycling with confidence

·          Enter a competition to win fantastic NEW bikes

This autumn, Bikeability is launching free schools resources to give 9 to 11-year-olds the opportunity to learn about the benefits of cycling for their health, the environment and the community.  These fun, interactive online games and activities allow teachers and pupils to explore and discuss issues around cycling in the classroom. Also provided is an inspiring set of materials to help teachers encourage cycling within the school, including whole-class activities, creative ideas and templates.

The resources are available whether or not your school already has a cycle training programme in place and are designed to fit into the existing curriculum, with clear links to Design and Technology, PSHE, PE and Geography.

To access the resources, visit the Bikeability website at www.bikeability.org.uk
